THE JADE MOUNTAIN

 NGOC-DINH INTRODUCTION

Ngoc-Dinh is a quyen, an exceptional set of movements, a form to discover. It is intended for the training of learners in three disciplines: VIETCHIDAO, VIETTAICHI and VIETKHIPHAP.

First and foremost it is safe to say Ngoc-Dinh offers physical exercises based on   Vietnamese martial art tradition for cultivating endurance and inner energy, in harmony with the five breathing methods of Vietchidao .

But, far beyond physical training, the depth of this quyen lies in the spirit and philosophy of life based on the history of the Jade Mountain. This story of the Jade Mountain tells us the adventure of five young men in search of a hard-to-reach goal: climbing to the summit of the Jade Mountain. They left their village together with the same goal but some will turn to different destinations. Each episode of the story is expressed by physical exercise in this quyen. In the story, there is no judgment on the decision made by each young man , everyone is free and responsible for his choice.

Towards the end of the story, what did the one who has successfully climbed to the top of the mysterious Jade Mountain have to say when he returned to his village? The reader will find the answer in the last movement, the movement 28 of this quyen.

The peculiarity of the form Ngoc-Dinh is this quyen can be performed in three different ways depending on the circumstances:

-       Very slowly as an internal workout.

-       Harmoniously with a variation of speed of execution as in most quyen of Viet Chi system.

-        Martial and dynamic  way with sharp gestures and formal stances

Story of

The Jade Mountain

Once upon a time there were five handsome young men, strong, good and honest, who were in search for the Jade Mountain.
According to the locals, the Jade Mountain was a wonderful mountain and those who would succeed in reaching its summit would get wealth, power and happiness.
The problem for these young men was that no one around them knew where the Jade Mountain was, nor where to go to find it. They decided to ask questions to dignitaries and respected people in their village.

They spoke first to the venerable monk of the great pagoda. Without hesitation, the monk asserted that the Jade Mountain was in heaven and that only those who lead an exemplary life on this earth could see it in their next life after their reincarnation.
When they went to the oldest man in the village, they heard a bleak answer. According to this old man, the Jade Mountain does not exist because it was invented to deceive fools and dreamers who think they can find a needle at the bottom of the ocean.
From the respectable wise man who lived peacefully on a green hill, they did not get an answer but a method to follow. According to this wise man, if the mountain exists it must be on this earth so if one goes around the earth one must find it.
The group of five young men found that this answer made sense and they decided to undertake a journey around the earth.

Hardly had they left their village, after only a few kilometers of walking, one of them decided to abandon this trip. After much thought, he found that going around the world without being sure to find the Jade Mountain was a matter of fatigue and wasted time.
The four others with great perseverance decided to continue their search for the Jade Mountain walking through fields, hills, rivers, forests and mountains.

Story of

The Jade Mountain

(continued)

One day they arrived at a working site where many people were busy extracting the gold found in the sand of the river. They stopped there and found work immediately. The salary was high and the workers could use their free time to find gold for themselves and thus enrich themselves quickly.

Considering the situation, a second young man from the group decided to stop the trip there and stay near this golden river to become rich. Without hesitation, the other three continued their journey.

After many adventures, one day a beautiful mountain appeared on the horizon. The inhabitants of the small village from which one could see from afar the beauty of this mountain affirmed to them with conviction that it was the Mountain of Jade. This peaceful village had the particularity of having very few men and many beautiful young women.

Overall, the young women had a family resemblance. They were gentle, hardworking and had a lot of talent. They knew how to cook, to knit, to make embroideries, to do gardening, to decorate the house and to spoil the men. Indeed, men were precious in this little paradise. Despite the reign of polygamy, many beautiful girls remained single until the age of thirty.

When the time came for the three young men to leave for the Jade Mountain, one of them was missing. He had fallen in love with the most beautiful girl in the village and decided to raise a family in this paradise where he was pampered. The other two men remained determined to continue their journey to discover the Jade Mountain. They felt more than ever bound by an unshakeable fraternity.

Story of The Jade Mountain (continued)

The Jade Mountain opened to the outside world by a small path visibly uncrowded. When the two young men arrived at the entrance of the path, they saw an old man sitting on a beautiful block of dark green stone. The man who was very old had no teeth left, his back was bent and his long white hair and beard were floating in the wind like clouds.

The man discouraged them from going to explore this Jade Mountain. According to him, despite its beautiful landscapes and magical power, the mountain also offered dangers and terrifying scenes of struggle for life and fight against death. To reach the summit, it was necessary to go through a large forest where fearsome animals, such as tigers, snakes and poisonous plants lived.

The old man who had just passed the age of one hundred and twenty years told them that the stone block on which he was sitting gave him strength and made him feel happy even though this stone was only a small rock compared to huge blocks of jade that cover the top of the mountain.

The discouraging advice of the old man shook the two young men. However, the thought of sitting on real big blocks of jade revived their fervor to continue their adventure.

As they went on the path, they saw on their right by the roadside a little hut in which lay a sick woman who was groaning in pain. She probably had a contagious disease and her family had put her in the forest away from her community. Sometimes in life painful situations push people to make decisions that break the heart.

They continued walking on the path and stopped at the foot of a tree to rest and eat some food that the women of the village had prepared for them.

They ate in silence when one of them uttered an exclamation of surprise. The shell of a small pale blue egg had just fallen on his head. The man raised his head and saw a bird's nest on a branch of the tree above him. A birth had just occurred.

They continued their progress in the forest. As the sun began to decline, they met a young man coming from the opposite direction and walking at a fast pace. The young man was pale with fear. He told them that further up in the mountain there were ghosts and he was hurrying out.

They listened attentively to the story of the young man but continued to advance towards the top of the mountain.

When it started to get dark, the wind began to blow very hard. The whistling of the wind through the branches of the trees was amplified by the echo of the mountain. It was as if an army of ghosts floated between the branches of the big trees screaming in a sinister way. It was terrifying.

Suddenly, they heard the roar of a tiger in the distance. The tallest one of the two young men immediately took the initiative to climb a tree. He looked down with the intention of helping his friend to climb. Alas, his companion was gone! He managed to catch a glimpse of his figure running towards the exit of the path.

His companion had abandoned him when danger became a reality. Fear had prevailed over courage.

Story of The Jade Mountain (continued)

After a terrifying night in the forest, under the sunlight the real beauty of nature was revealed. Our young man regained all his strength and confidence. His long wooden stick was now his only companion who would give him protection against tigers or snakes.

While walking, he observed the beauty of all kinds of flowers, many of which were very rare because it was the first time he saw them. He admired them with happiness.

While observing towards the top of the trees, he discovered a whole new universe, the universe of the birds with their melodious songs but also their struggle to survive in a ruthless world.

The path climbed steeply up, again and again, turning around the mountain to facilitate its ascension. Yes, in the mountains as in life, the road to success is not always a direct one there are unexpected turns, difficult and even desperate climbs. But the top of the Jade Mountain was still there as a guide for our young man.

Finally, he reached the summit. From this summit, he saw the sky open without limits to infinity. He saw the ocean in the distance and down the beautiful green forest that covered the slopes of the Jade Mountain. Things remained the same but he now saw them differently. He felt a great happiness invading him, happiness born of the accomplishment of having overcome a challenge.

He sat on a large jade rock and suddenly he saw the reflection of his face on the polished side like a mirror of another jade rock. He watched his image carefully and found that he had remained the same young man. Nothing had changed. His physical appearance remained the same but his mind was strengthened and now he felt able to overcome all the difficulties of life.

Back in his village, he saw the same village but his view of the village, the familiar landscapes, the life and the time that had passed had changed profoundly. Yet apparently things had remained the same, as he himself was. However, the villagers found that since his return from the Jade Mountain, they felt in his presence a mysterious power that emanated from him.

When the villagers came to ask him to tell his trip to the Jade Mountain, he remained imperturbably silent, keeping for himself the secret of the Jade Mountain. /.

THE STRUCTURE OF         NGOC-DINH,

The Jade Mountain

NGOC-DINH consists of 28  movements or sequences. After the movement of salutation (facing South), this quyen operates mainly along the axis East-West then in the end the last movements, Movements 27 and 28, are back to the starting point.

This structure of Ngoc-Dinh observes the Vietchi modern structure called Method Hang-Ngang (Horizontal Line). The traditional structure of most Vietnamese quyen is set on four directions rather than in one horizontal line as Ngoc-Dinh does. Advanced learners of Ngoc-Dinh might want to perform these same 28 movements but in the opposite side according to the rule of symmetry. Performing this quyen by following its structure you are likely following the journey of these five young men who wanted to reach the top of the Jade Mountain. Did all of them succeed in their quest?

NGOC-DINH AND CRITICAL THINKING

Beyond the physical exercises Ngoc Dinh offers a great opportunity to learner and teacher for exploring new ideas, and training under the critical thinking spirit.
This means in the role of a teacher you can guide your black-belts and advanced students to learn by discovering themselves different aspects of a same fact or concept.
Critical Thinking is a good method for this purpose.

For the scope of this chapter, in a practical and simplest way we see this method as a method using observation, analysis, reason and logic to come to a conclusion about a subject under investigation. In order to engage in critical thinking the student of Ngoc Dinh must have an open mind for discussion, value new ideas, accept evidence rather than beliefs.

Through 28 Movements of Ngoc Dinh teacher and students can select one or several movements to be a subject of investigation. That could be in the field of body training, physical logic, mental training, meditation, life experience, virtue, philosophical concept, and so on.  Then in the end the group could arrive to an accepted conclusion, unanimously or by consensus. So under the guidance of the teacher each group could build a method to follow according to the nature of the subject.
As an example, here are some steps that could be followed.

Step 1. Choosing a subject and ask question(s).

For example: Movements 27 and 28. What does it mean We are always ourselves; why the young man who has reached the top of the Jade Mountain stayed silent when he came back to his village?

Step 2 . Critical observation to find out interesting facts; collect new ideas through discussion.

For example: How would the group interpret the gesture of Movement 27? What is the meaning of Movement 28? Maybe there is nothing to say, is it just a movement for closing the quyen Ngoc Dinh?

NGOC DINH and

CRITICAL THINKING (continued)

Step 3. Analysis.

For example: Movements 27 and 28 are the closing part of Ngoc Dinh. So first we can put them back to the whole set of 28 movements  which starts with a wide scope (exploring Sky, Ocean, Earth) to better understand why in the end the quyen  finished  with something rather mystic or  introverted, turning to oneself.

Then after the group can analyze the different aspects of the affirmation We are always ourselves .

Step 4.  Reasoning.

For example: Is this young man stupid? He explored the Jade Mountain to discover many things and after he did not say a word. Is his attitude acceptable?

Step 5. Discussion and conclusion.

For example: After discussion the group can arrive at a conclusion which will be the answer to the question in step 1.

NOTE. In this example, the group could also better focus their investigation on the physical and technical development of movements 27 and 28, rather than on the mental aspect.

The group could start with the question How hard is it to manage to go back exactly at the starting point. Then they will discover that the key, the solution, lays at the Movement 27 (at the end of Movement 26: raise the left leg then put it close to the starting line, then the right leg down next to the starting point, Movement 27: left leg put to the other side of the starting point.)

CONCLUSION

Ngoc-Dinh is an exceptional quyen which offers several levels of learning from beginner to advanced Black-Belts.

One important aspect of Ngoc Dinh teaching and training is it does not dictate the way to follow; rather it presents a variety of options to choose by each learner. However it does point-out the Cause-and-Effect theory: the out-put you get is related to the in-put you had introduced. /.
