  POST 34 October 2023

   BAT DIEU BO   The Eight Birds

 BAT DIEU BO

The Bat Dieu Bo, meaning sequence of the 8 birds (Bat: 8, Dieu: birds, Bo: sequence), is part of a basic VietChiDao triad devised by the GM. (The triad is composed of Bat Dieu Bo - sequence of the 8 birds, Hoanh Son - the form of the mountain range, and Than Ho - the form of the guardian tiger.)

STRUCTURE

The Bat Dieu Bo consists of 8 birds each associated with a direction, a virtue, a trigram.

It makes use of 8 movements that take place in 8 directions and 3 dimensions:

"We divide a circle into 8 sectors and assign each one a number that we must try to remember even if their sequence changes. Then we replace the numbers with the names of some birds. We thus construct the figure of 8 birds."

"By staying on the ground one moves only in 2 dimensions. Flying, on the other hand, one moves in 3 dimensions."

 (GM, stage Caldonazzo 2014).

8 BIRDS

The birds that make up the Bat Dieu are, in order of execution of movements:

Chèo Bẻo - Black Drongo - Drongo nero

Chim Chích - Chickadee - Cinciarella

Chim Kền - Condor - Condor

Đại Bàng - Eagle - Aquila

Diều Hâu - Sparrowhawk - Sparviero

Hải Âu - Seabird - Gabbiano

Bói Cá - Kingfisher - Martin pescatore

Chim Công - Peacock – Pavone

8 DIRECTIONS

Each movement is performed in one direction:

Chèo Bẻo - Black Drongo - Drongo nero: SOUTH

Chim Chích - Chickadee - Cinciarella: SOUTH-WEST

Chim Kền - Condor - Condor: SOUTH-EAST

Đại Bàng - Eagle -Aquila: EAST

Diều Hâu - Sparrowhawk - Sparviero: NORTH-EAST

Hải Âu - Seabird - Gabbiano: NORTH

Bói Cá - Kingfisher - Martin pescatore: WEST

Chim Công - Peacock - Pavone: NORTH-WEST.

9 VIRTUES

With each of the 8 birds and the final salute the GM associated 9 virtues:

Chèo Bẻo - Black Drongo - Drongo nero: BENEVOLENCE

Chim Chích - Chickadee - Cinciarella: SELF-CONFIDENCE

Chim Kền - Condor - Condor: RESILIENCE

Đại Bàng - Eagle - Aquila: COURAGE

Diều Hâu - Sparrowhawk - Sparviero: RIGHTEOUSNESS

Đại Bàng - Seabird - Gabbiano: VISION

Bói Cá - Kingfisher - Martin pescatore: RELIABILITY

Chim Công - Peacock - Pavone: GENEROSITY

Final salute: DIGNITY.

METHOD

The book Ky-Lo, along with the book Ky-Mon published eight year ago, in 2009, contributes to enrich the collection of learning materials for black-belts and teachers, which has hundreds of documents under the format of teaching letters from Master Phan Hoang over the last 45 years, since the creation of Vietvodao International/VOVIET in Limoges, 1972.

Ky-Lo has been revealed to blacks-belts and masters at the international training sessions in Pisa (Italy, 2009) but taught for the first time in Cambridge (UK, 2016) when Grand Master Phan Hoang, at the age of 80, looking back to the long path he has traveled, transmitted the essence of Ky Lo to his disciples who came to The Cambridge Stage that year.

Ky-Lo is a specific quyen (form, choreographic movements) and has its own method. The whole form Ky-Lo consists of 28 Postures. Each Posture is a still position and it is represented by a still image, a numbered picture.

Through the collection of pictures, from 01 to 86, the learner could clearly see that between Postures there are Sequences. A Sequence is, like a video clip, a series of pictures that help present a moving action, in other word to show how to execute a movement.

In the Ky-Lo learning method the learner will not learn the whole form at once but learn sequence by sequence, under different aspects (action, quality, value, mind, etc.). Therefore, depending on the capacity of the learners, each teacher could decide on the length and the number of Sequences to be performed at each session of training.

In this book the 28 postures are presented in six chapters (Part 1 to part 6).

It is important to understand that Ky-Lo is not a usual book. It is a book with multi-layers and multi-aspects.

So learning step by step, with deep repetition, assimilation, and reflection will lead to a better understanding of the various contents often hidden inside Ky-Lo.

In fact, Ky-Lo is a kind of forest to a new traveler to discover. Each traveler will gain his or her own discoveries.

At some level, someone could say Ky-Lo is a book without words, only symbols; each picture is a symbol.

THE WAY OF TRAINING

Post 33, Sept 2023
THE WAY OF TRAINING

 (Pictures 43 to 51)

This Part 3 deals with the Way of Training.  Four postures are engaged:

·         Posture Kiai!                     Pic. No 43;

·         Posture No name             Pic. No 46;

·         Posture No Moon             Pic. No 48;

·         Posture No Image            Pic. No 49.

KIAI and Breathing technique.

Kiai  -KHI-THET (Khí-Thét) in Vietnamese-  is a general term of  a series of techniques for various purposes: attack, defense, healing, self-healing, awakening, voice improvement, inner-power development, psychology. Among these techniques count the following:

·         Khng-Thiết  is a Khí-Thét which terrifies the attacker;

·         Chn-Thiết  is a Khí-Thét preventing attack from aggressors;

·         An-Thiết  is a healing Khí-Thét.

·         Vng Thiết  is a Khí-Thét cutting all burdens that prevent us to be in harmony with the Universe.

The Kiai presented in this Part 3 is a  Khng-Thiết.

The breathing technique for this training is based on the method of Lung-Belly Breathing (Tho-Phoi-Bung). The terrifying sound must be obtained, after long period of training, thanks to the conjunction of two factors:

-the very high speed of large volume of exiting air, and

-the vibration of high pitch sound obtained through the resonating cavity of the mouth.

THE WAY OF TRAINING.

The aim of training is for improving our skill and for raising our capacity  to a higher state in a specific field. Therefore it is not a pastime, it is a serious work although we often have some pleasure in doing it. Keep in mind that Ky-Lo is an advanced learning document intended for the education of our black-belts. We would like, for this Part 3, to remind you some main points concerning The Way of Training, as follows.

1.       Clear Focus                                       (t-đim)

2.      Rigorous Application                      (nghiêm-túc)

3.      High Precision                                 (chính-sác)

4.      Appropriate Speed                           (vn-hành)

5.      Inner Power                                                 (ni-kình)

6.      Natural Flow                                    (thn-nhiên)

7.      Correct Breathing                           (chân-khí)

8.     Mind-Body Harmony                     (tâm-vt nht-như)

9.      Reaching Excellence                       t-tuyt-đim)

Beyond these nine basic principles for any training the learner will discover that this Part 3 reveals another important concept:  The Visible and The Invisible.

Any good training does contain two aspects, the one is apparent, so that people can see it as movement, count it as quantity, ascertain the extent; and the other is intangible, so that only the performer can really follow what is flowing inside as the level of inner-energy, the meaning of each movement, the beauty of the spirit, and so on. To guide the learner this Part 3 uses four postures as symbols:

·         Posture Kiai!
To show with full force what should be a good training (visible part) .

·         Posture No name.
Training is for oneself, no need to show it to the public.

·         Posture No Moon.
Training is conducted deep inside.

·         Posture No Image.
Training is without boundaries.

STORY -
Khí-Thét is a power of exceptional people.

The History of Vietnamese Masters counts some exceptional masters such as:

-Master Đo-Hnh (?-1117) who once made a strong sound that reverberated all around the mountain like a growl of a big tiger.

At this same period in History of Vietnam, another exceptional master was recorded, Master Thong-Huyen, whose sound made a gecko (cc-kè) fall from the roof of a temple.

In the 19th century during a fierce battle an elephant from the opposing army tried to charge general Phan-Bá-Vàng;  he then produced  a terrifying khí-thét that made the elephant ran back charging its own troupe.

In the 1960s, at the Pagoda Long-Hoa near Saigon, master Thanh-Tr, a Buddhist monk, frequently used with great success a low frequency sound to heal sick people who came to his temple.
