Presentation

   

 

 

 

 

The VAN LY sequence was created by Grand Master Phan Hoang on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Viet Vo Dao, the Vietnamese Martial Art founded by the Grand Master together with 6 other Masters on April 2, 1972 in Limoges.

VIET VO DAO, in these fifty years, has undergone transformations and evolutions until today you get Viet Chi Dao, enriched by the VIET CHI SYSTEM, the beautiful flower with 8 petals.

 

In the meantime, many children, young people, women and men have grown up breathing the air of this great family and as in all great families, when you leave you carry our roots in your heart and mind, the source from which our way has sprung.

So the source, from which a great river springs.

The river branches into a myriad of branches that travel 'ten thousand miles' and although the directions are different from each other, they carry with them and share the same values of the source from which they started.

 

This is VAN LY, a small sequence with profound meaning, a more meaningful gift we could not have expected.

 

  

 

 

 

 

  VN-LÝ

INTRODUCTION   

 

 

 

 

VN = Ten Thousand 

                     = Miles    

Literally VAN-LY means Ten Thousand Miles. This symbolic title can carry different messages and it invites us to discover various interpretations all along the way of our progress in the practice of this form. Here are some suggestions:

-Many branches of the great river Mekong go a long way in different directions to bring water to various areas in South Vietnam. Although these branches are different to each other they all share the same values of their source, the “mother of all rivers”.

-Ten Thousand Miles is a very long road that offers surprises and challenges to the travellers so how would we prepare ourselves for that journey. Maybe Van-Ly is a guide-book that could help.

-Ten Thousand Miles symbolize a very long distance that separates two worlds; the world of happy people and the world of unhappy people. Maybe Van-Ly could contain some secret keys to make change.

-Simply Ten Thousand Miles is an exceptional trip to discover, so just do it with open-mindedness.

-Maybe Ten Thousand Miles is the road of our life; we are already on that road trying to get a successful and happy life.

STRUCTURE OF VAN-LY

  

 

 

 

 The form Van-Ly consists of five parts with a total of 18 movements organized in the modern structure called Method Hang-Ngang (Horizontal Line). The traditional structure of most Vietnamese forms is set on four directions rather than in one horizontal line as Van-Ly does.

 

The five parts inspire the teaching of our Way through the sequences in Van-Ly, as follows:

1.     Way of Being,

2.   Way of Training,

3.   Way of Doing,

4.   Way of Achieving,

5.    Way of Happiness.

 

In each part some movements are selected for building a corresponding Exercise, so there are five Exercises to start practicing first before learning the whole form of Van-Ly.

 

 

 







 

 

 

EXERCISE 1 – OUR WAY OF BEING

 On the high road of Ten Thousand Miles the most important issue we must care about is keeping our Mind quiet, unaffected and open.

Stay still for one minute in the posture 01b could help a great deal in training ourselves.

 

Sur la grande route des Dix Mille Miles, le point le plus important dont nous devons nous préoccuper est de garder notre esprit calme, non affecté et ouvert.

Rester immobile pendant une minute dans la posture 01b pourrait nous aider grandement à nous entraîner.

 

Sulla strada delle Diecimila Miglia la cosa più importante di cui dobbiamo preoccuparci è mantenere la nostra Mente tranquilla, non influenzata e aperta.

Stare fermi per un minuto nella postura 01b potrebbe aiutare molto il nostro allenamento personale.

 On the high road of Ten Thousand Miles keep training ourselves every day is not an easy task, so we must be persistent. But the most difficult issue is the quality of our training while we are on the road.

The posture 04d could help reminding us that good training must be deep and effective. So be persistent on this matter.

 

Sur la grande route des Dix Mille Miles, s'entraîner chaque jour n'est pas une tâche facile, il faut donc être persévérant. Mais le problème le plus difficile est la qualité de notre entraînement pendant que nous sommes sur la route.

La posture 04d pourrait contribuer à nous rappeler qu'un bon entraînement doit être profond et efficace. Soyez donc persévérants à ce sujet.

 

Sulla strada delle Diecimila Miglia continuare ad allenarsi ogni giorno non è un compito facile, quindi dobbiamo essere persistenti. Ma la questione più difficile è la qualità del nostro allenamento mentre siamo sulla strada.

La postura 04d ci può aiutare a ricordare che un buon allenamento deve essere profondo ed efficace. Quindi siate persistenti su questo punto.

 On the high road of Ten Thousand Miles we search to integrate creativity into what we are doing, and make what we are doing meaningful. Frequently ask the question “Why am I doing this?”

In this Exercise 3 the posture 06b could help reminding us that we focus our attention to what we are doing and elevate it at the level of Art. 

 

Sur la route des Dix Mille Miles, nous cherchons à intégrer la créativité dans ce que nous faisons, et à donner un sens à ce que nous faisons. Nous nous posons fréquemment la question "Pourquoi est-ce que je fais cela ?".

Dans cet exercice 3, la posture 06b pourrait aider à nous rappeler que nous concentrons notre attention sur ce que nous faisons et l'élevons au niveau de l'Art. 

 

Sulla strada delle Diecimila Miglia cerchiamo di integrare la creatività in quello che stiamo facendo, per renderlo significativo. Bisogna porsi frequentemente la domanda "Perché lo sto facendo?”

Nell’Esercizio 3 la postura 06b potrebbe aiutarci a ricordare che concentriamo la nostra attenzione su ciò che stiamo facendo e lo eleviamo a livello di Arte. 

 

 



 

 

 

 

  EXERCISE 4 - OUR WAY OF ACHIEVING

The high road of Ten Thousand Miles gives us the opportunity to learn and to discover many precious things. We link our discoveries and learning to achievement, and our useful achievement will be a contribution to the good of society.

The posture 12b in this Exercise 4 symbolizes the act of giving back to others what we have achieved on the high road of Ten Thousand Miles.

 

La grande route des Dix Mille Miles nous donne l'occasion d'apprendre et de découvrir de nombreuses choses précieuses. Nous associons nos découvertes et notre apprentissage à une réalisation, et notre réalisation utile sera une contribution au bien-être de la société.

La posture 12b de cet exercice 4 symbolise l'acte de rendre aux autres ce que nous avons accompli sur le chemin des Dix Mille Miles.

 

La strada delle Diecimila Miglia ci dà l'opportunità di imparare e di scoprire molte cose preziose. Colleghiamo le nostre scoperte e l'apprendimento alla realizzazione, e la nostra realizzazione utile sarà un contributo al bene della società.

La postura 12b dell’Esercizio 4 simboleggia l'atto di restituire agli altri ciò che abbiamo ottenuto sulla strada delle Diecimila Miglia.

ESERCIZIO 5 - IL NOSTRO MODO DI ESSERE FELICI

 

   

 

 

 

 The high road of Ten Thousand Miles, no matter how challenging it could be, must be the road of HAPPINESS because we consider it that way. Smiling and optimism are the keys to happiness.

The posture 14c and posture 15d in this Exercise 5 express our attitude: With optimism looking up to the sky then looking down on the road while advancing. 

 

La route des Dix Mille Miles, aussi difficile soit-elle, doit être la route du BONHEUR parce que nous la considérons ainsi. Le sourire et l'optimisme sont les clés du bonheur.

La posture 14c et la posture 15d de cet exercice 5 expriment notre attitude : Avec optimisme en regardant le ciel puis en regardant la route en avançant.   

 

La strada delle Diecimila Miglia, per quanto impegnativa possa essere, deve essere la strada della FELICITÀ, perché noi la consideriamo così. Il sorriso e l'ottimismo sono le chiavi della felicità.

La postura 14c e la postura 15d dell’Esercizio 5 esprimono il nostro atteggiamento: con ottimismo guardiamo il cielo e poi guardiamo la strada mentre avanziamo.

CONCLUSION

   

 

 

 

 

The form VAN-LY (Ten Thousand Miles), along with BAI DI-XA (Go Far) are, so far, two unique forms dealing with the important subject on the art of travelling. Whenever we move from one place to another place we are in the process of travelling that puts our body and our mind in action, no matter how far the distance could be. We remember Travelling Is Discovering and the practice of Van-Ly brings us to another world to discover: The World of multi-dimensions and inter-related-layers of movements, feeling, spirit, vision and action. All are integrated in one form that could speak, in a silent way, for ten thousand discourses./.
