 Teaching THE FIVE STANCES

Studying the stances/tan is crucial to the progress of students in all our eight disciplines. Basically there are 18 stances that are presented in the previous Post (April 2021) and we invite you to review it. Now in this Post (May 2021) we continue the study of stances with the Five Stances that are as follows.

(A) Lap Tan, Stance 01                                   DIGNITY          (Lung Breathing)

Our Way: Stand up and be strong

(B)Dinh Tan, Stance 07                       RESILIENCE    (Belly Breathing) . Our Way: Fighting and winning by Courage and Strength

(C)TRUNG BINH TAN, Stance 09          COURAGE

Our Way: Fighting and winning by Skillfulness and Patience

(D)Hac Tan, Stance 12                                   RECTITUDE    (Lung Breathing). Our Way: Be a crane in peace time and a terrific eagle in war time

(E)Thai Am Tan, Stance 13                 GENEROSITY (Lung Breathing)

Our Way: Using a “soft way” to modify the current bedrock

FIRST  LEVEL. Each stance/tan is independent and the focus at this level of training is on the correctness of execution of each stance and the strength of your legs.

SECOND  LEVEL. The focus at this level of training is on your deep breathing and your endurance while staying still at each posture.

THIRD  LEVE . At this level you will execute the five stances in one set of continuous movements on a half of a circle as indicated in the attached pictures. You should practice 9 times or more until you know well the moving order of these five stances on a half of a circle. Your mind will be on the meaning of each stance when you are moving along.

NOTE. For the purpose of theoretical study and practical fighting tactic we can connect the Five Stances to the Theory of Five Elements as follows:

A)Lap Tan : Sky, Fire;  B)Dinh Tan: Iron, Metal;  C)Trung Binh Tan: Earth

D)Hac Tan : Wood, Wind ;  E)Thai Am Tan: Water

This is in the language of symbols translating thoughts and actions./.

DAI HOANG QUYEN, A Secret Methodology

Master Phan Hoang, Online Teaching Spring 2020 – Blog VIETCHIDAO Post May 2021

INTRODUCTION. The form (quyen, kata) DAI HOANG is one of the most important forms in the eight disciplines of the Vietchi System. Created in 1983, it is the leading form to the study of Educational Martial Art for those who want to explore the large field of martial arts beyond traditional frontiers.

SITUATION.  Certainly martial art is a noble discipline, a good sport. However it cannot not help respond to various expectations of the learners which go beyond the boundaries of fighting art. To open up a new way, the way of Educational Martial Art which implies many aspects of new knowledge, the first task would be rebuilding the curriculum. But how should we proceed?  A practical methodology is needed.

PROBLEM.  In January 1983, starting from France, Master Phan Hoang, the founding master of VIETVODAO International, engaged himself in a world tour for a year, visiting a number of temples and martial art centers, meeting many highly respected people. Along the high road many discoveries and ideas were accumulated in his mind under multiple layers of knowledge and know-hows. There were too many items to be organized in one model while he was on the road around the world in 1983!

SOLUTION.  The solution was to create a powerful quyen (kata, form) which consists only of 9 movements.  The particularity of that quyen is the meaning of each movement can be interpreted under different perspective, as follows. (Please see pictures /video for the movements)

A.      Using “Number Theory” to carry instructions

B.      Using “Posture Name” to identify each group of techniques

C.      Using “Animal Symbol” to teach training methods,  fighting techniques, and the art of war

D.      Using  “Eight Trigrams” to express notions and combinations

E.        Using “Way of Life” to teach Behavior and Strategy

Some examples of Number: Number One= Be Unique; Two: Work in Team; Three: Create Stability; Four: Be Thoughtful; Five: Be Generous; Six: Act with Discernment; Seven: Train for Endurance; Eight: React with Swiftness Nine: Behave with Dignity… 18: Standard number of movements in a quyen; 28: Perfect number. 108: Sacred number etc.

Regarding Postures, we use each number to identify the corresponding posture, but keep in mind that the system of postures is independent to the system of number in the way of meaning and application. Each posture reflects a specific series of selected techniques. These diverse techniques can be learned at our seminars or in our documents and books
