THE BIRTH OF THE FORM THIEN DAI A Journey from Monument Valley
to the Inner Self
In 1995, I visited the Monument Valley, a
famous place in Colorado (USA). The immensity and purity of the landscape
touched me deeply. The red earth, the monumental rock formations, the endless
sky, and the silence created a feeling that was difficult to describe. I felt liberated. I felt physically strong and
spiritually awakened.
For a moment, I felt that I was standing at
the center of something much greater than myself. Yet I did not feel
insignificant. Instead, I felt connected—to the earth beneath me, to the
immense sky above me, and to the natural forces moving quietly around me.
That experience stayed in my heart.
The mountains, the sky, the eagle, the wind,
the earth—all seemed to speak a language of movement, balance, freedom, and
strength. From this experience, the idea of Thien Dai began to
emerge. Thien Dai is a martial form composed
of eight dynamic body-and-mind movements. Each movement represents an
image, an attitude, and a stage of an inner journey. The form begins with a
human being standing quietly within the immensity of nature and ends with
something very simple: being oneself and being happy. Between those two
points is a journey of awakening.
Movement 1 — The Quiet Man at the Center of
Great Nature A quiet person stands at the center of great
nature.
Movement 2 — To the Immensity of the Sky The sky has no apparent boundary; it invites
us to expand our consciousness beyond our ordinary limitations.
Movement 3 — Open the Mind and Awaken To open the mind is to become receptive—to see
what we have not seen before, to feel what we have not felt before, and to
recognize possibilities beyond our habitual ways of thinking.
Movement 4 — Be Free and Fly High Like an
Eagle The eagle became an image of freedom, seeing
the world from a greater perspective, moving through the immense sky without
fear.
Movement 5 — Overcoming All Obstacles The monumental rocks of Monument Valley became
a powerful symbol: they have endured wind, weather, time, and change, yet
they remain standing. We, too, can learn to face difficulty with
strength.
Movement 6 — Balancing Between Sky and
Earth, Body and Mind We belong both to the earth and to the sky. The body is connected to the earth; the mind
reaches toward the infinite.
Movement 7 — Staying Stable in a Changing
World The world is always changing. Like the great formations of Monument Valley,
we can learn to have roots while accepting change.
Movement 8 — Be Yourself, Be Happy The journey ends with simplicity. After becoming quiet, opening to the sky,
awakening the mind, discovering freedom, overcoming obstacles, finding
balance, and learning stability, we return to ourselves. Be oneself, be
happy.
Looking back, I realize that my visit to
Monument Valley in 1995 was more than a memorable journey. It was an encounter. The immensity and purity
of that place gave me a feeling of liberation and strength that I wanted to
preserve—not only as a memory, but as an experience that could be expressed
through movement of human body. The form Thien Dai became that expression.
